Usman Continues on his path to GOAT status.
Usman vs Covington II was another gritty brawl that went the distance this time around but not without the lack of trying to end the fight early. In this fight, both continued to show exactly why that was the match to make in the division.
From beginning to end the fight had everyone on the edge of their seats, long instances of both fighters stalking one another turned into quick and violent exchanges. But after dropping Colby twice in one round it soon became a one-sided fight for survival. Usman showed himself to be the more powerful fighter as the exchanges continued and Colby had the volume but no real power behind it to concern the Nigerian Nightmare.
Even when wrestling was incorporated the effort used to get Usman down was shown to be not worth it as Usman ended up in the better position in every instance. For the latter half of the fight, it seemed all Usman as he confidently stalked his prey and used that powerful jab to control the pace. Ultimately that control held the usually pressuring Colby at bay and gave the #1 P4P fighter another Ruby on his belt.
Now the question is what’s next for Usman, he’s proving himself to be the welterweight GOAT and moving in the discussion for greatest MMA fighter. There are challengers lining up but no one who anyone believes is a real threat to the reigning champion. He also discussed a crossover fight with Canelo, which seems to be a tough ask but after tonight why would you doubt him? Whatever he does next I expect to see a better version of him doing so I can’t wait to see the Nigerian Nightmare step the cage again or the ring for the first time.
